Ever since the hype about Aakash tablet, the Indian tablet market has seen a lot of new companies pushing hard to put together cheapest available resources and manufacture value for money tablets. There is a huge competition between few of the well known India manufacturers like Micromax, Beetle, HCL, Zync, Karbonn and lot more. Here I put together few good quality and value for money tablets offering best features for their price.
Micromax Funbook
Micromax has been giving tough competition to some of the bigger brands like Nokia, Samsung etc for their lower end phones. This seems to be repeating with the tablets gaining popularity. Micromax Funbook is one such tablet which has received huge popularity. Priced at only Rs. 6500.00, it offers a 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS (the latest Android OS available at this moment) and a 1.2 GHz Cortex A8 CPU with 3D Graphics. This is currently one of the most reasonably priced tablet in India. Its selling so well that it went out of stock in only one month on the online sipping site Flipcart.com.
Full specifications are below:

HCL ME U1
HCL has been in the computer market since a long time and does provide cheaper alternatives to the likes of Dell, HP and IBM. They have recently started exploring the tablet market as well and can be one of the future contenders for the Aakash tablet promoted by the Government. Their recent release is called HCL ME U1. Priced at Rs 7900.00 has a Cortex A8 1GHz Processor which is slower than the funbook or some of the other cheaper tablets. With an Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) has similar features that Funbook offers except its 3600 mAh battery and screen with only dual touch point support.
Full specs are listed below:
- Android 4.0.3 – Ice Cream Sandwich OS
- Cortex A8 1.0 Ghz processor
- 12 MB RAM
- 4GB Internal memory

- 0.3 Megapixel Camera
- Connectivity
- Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
- 3G Modem support
- USB 2.0
- 3600 mAh battery
Zync Pad Z990
Zync is relatively a new brand and faces tough competition from the other manufacturers. Has almost 6 Android variants currently listed on the site, ranging from Rs 4990.00 to Rs 12990.00. One we chose for this article was Zync Pad Z990. This tablet has recently received a lot of popularity under the budget range. This too offers features similar to the Funbook but sports 1GB of RAM improving its performance. Priced at Rs 8990.00, offers some other features like 5 point multi-touch capacitive display, Accelerometer and a whooping 3600 mAh battery. Considering the price of 9k the only extra features offered in the tablet are bigger battery and bigger RAM. Zync has other variants with lower prices but are lower end and cannot be compared with the other budget tabs under 10k
Lets look at its full specs:
- 1.2 GHz Processor and Vivante Gc430 graphics processor
- 1 GB DDR3 RAM
- 5 Point Multi-touch capacitive screen with 480×800 resolution
- 4 GB Internal Storage
- Connectivity
- Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
- 3G Modem support
- USB 2.0
- Stereo speakers
- 3600 mAh battery
Final Verdict
There are a lot of other Indian brands offering similar features under almost similar price tags. These devices are great for users looking for a media device for on the go web surfing and media player or gamers who do not wish to spend big bucks on the higher end tabs. Almost all these budget tabs have a plasticky feel and the build quality can not be compared to the likes of Samsung or HTC. However they are best at the price they are offered. Micromax Funbook is currently a clear winner among the other tabs. Compared to its features the price it is offered is way too less than its competitors. It provides full media support and support games HD games (eg: Backstab HD, Asphalt 6 HD) which require High Graphics support and plays even 1080p full HD videos without any issue.
If you are planning to go for one of these budget tabs and are dicey, just go for it as these tablets offer the best features you can get at such a small price. If you feel there is a better tablet to compete with ones reviewed here, leave a comment and tell us about it !
